Wall of Tribute

You are cordially invited to be part of the Shrine's historic Wall of Tribute.

Our immigrant parents, grandparents and loved ones left their country of origin with hope and prayers for a life of prosperity in the United States. Their struggles and successes are epic. What better way to remember them by revering their faith in God, love of country and family on the Wall of Tribute?

As you enter the Shrine, you will sense and feel overwhelming awe and pride. It is truly a wonderful witness to our Greek Orthodox faith and our rich Hellenic heritage.

On February 27, 1982, a dream came true when the doors of our National Shrine opened as a memorial to the first permanent colony of Greeks, who arrived on this continent on June 26, 1768. The colonists found refuge in St. Augustine in 1777 after surviving much hardship as indentured servants at the New Smyrna colony.

St. Photios Shrine is located in the colonial Spanish quarter of downtown St. Augustine, the oldest continually functioning U.S. city. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is known as “The Jewel of St. George Street”, the city’s tourism center which is one of the nation’s top locations for vacation.

Over 100,000 visitors pass through the Shrine each year, giving some visitors their first experience of Greek Orthodox worship in the beautiful Chapel, which glows with exquisite iconography by renowned Byzantine artist, George Fillipakis.
