St. Augustine, FL – Educators from throughout the United States will convene this weekend in America’s oldest city for the second annual Ioannis Giannopoulos Award Banquet. This event is sponsored by the Federation of Hellenic American Educators in collaboration with the Teachers’ Association “Athena” of Florida, the Association “Hellenic Paideia” of New York and the support of the Pan-Hellenic Federation of Florida. The group will honor Mr. Andre Papantoniou with the John Giannopoulos Award. The St Photios Greek Orthodox National Shrine, located in the at the historic Avero House, 41 St George St in St Augustine’s Colonial Spanish Quarter will host the group Friday, November 30th from 6-9:00 p.m. at the Shrine. On Saturday at 1:00 p.m., the group will gather with civic and ecclesiastical dignitaries for a memorial service and procession to the Tolomato Cemetery where wreaths will be placed at the tomb of Mary Giannopoulos Darling. The group will then depart for Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church located at 2940 CR 214 for the lecture and banquet. Mr. Papantoniou will present “The Legacy of John Giannopoulos and His Work.” Andre Papantoniou was born in Dara, Arcadia, in 1943. He graduated from the High School of Tripoli and in 1961, he moved to Canada, where lived for five years. Papantoniou attended McGill University. The St. Photios Foundation thanks chairperson Mrs. Stella Kokolis for organizing this event in St. Augustine. Mrs. Kokolis is recognized locally, nationally and internationally as a prominent community leader, educator and humanitarian. She has received numerous awards for her professional, charitable and political work by major organizations and political leaders both in the United States and abroad.
